Disc Spring stacks for spring-applied disc brake actuator
Disc springs also called Belleville washers are mainly used in hydraulic or pneumatic caliper disc brakes to provide brake clamping force in cranes, mining, conveyer system and manufacturing where automatic engagement is required upon power loss.
Caliper disc brakes utilize stacks of disc springs to generate force, which is then released by air or hydraulic pressure.
Figure 1 shows schematically a spring-applied band brake formed by disc springs or Belleville washers where, depending on the manual or hydraulic release, the piston compressing them is displaced axially by the operator turning the brake handle or by the hydraulic pressure acting on the oil chamber respectively.
To release the brake once the winch is engaged, the operator further decompresses spring against the piston by turning the brake handle anticlockwise.
To apply the brake from the released condition, the operator turns the brake handle clockwise.

Figure 2 shows a hydraulic spring-applied caliper disc brake. Braking force is provided by a stack of Belleville washers or disc springs. Belleville washers are capable of storing enormous force. When the brake is pressurized a piston moves to compress the Belleville spring washer stacks, thus releasing the disc. |
