Disc Springs in Welding Gas Regulators

May 28, 2026

In modern welding systems, stable gas delivery is essential for achieving consistent weld quality, arc stability, and operator safety. One important but often hidden component inside high-performance welding gas regulators is the disc spring, also known as a Belleville spring washer.

In high-performance gas regulators and pressure regulators, especially those designed for precise pressure control, stable outlet performance, or customized pressure response characteristics, engineers increasingly use disc springs (Belleville springs) as part of the preload system. Compared with traditional coil springs, disc springs provide several important mechanical advantages that significantly improve regulator performance.

  • Non-linear stiffness curve

Disc springs are soft at the beginning of compression and become stiffer as the load increases. This helps maintain a more stable outlet pressure and reduces pressure drift.

  • Better creep resistance

Compared with traditional coil springs, disc springs provide more stable preload force during long-term compression and are less likely to relax or collapse over time.

  • Customizable pressure response

Disc springs can be stacked in series or parallel to achieve different force and deflection characteristics, allowing engineers to create customized pressure response curves and finer pressure adjustment.

Therefore, disc springs are commonly used in high-performance industrial gas regulators, manifold systems, and precision pressure control equipment where stable and accurate pressure regulation is required.
